How many web designers can say they have made their living from a web site they have written?

Most people running or starting any kind of business want a web site to promote their business and indeed in today's internet aware society it's really a must have rather than a nice to have.
But where do you start?
I met a man who ended up selling his house to pay web designers that overcharged him for everything from his domain name through to his shopping cart and everything in between - and to add insult to injury he made very few sales from the site.
I might add the company he went to was an apparently reputable web design company, with smart offices and several staff members and who thoroughly impressed him with their 'techno' speak and promises of fantastic search engine optimisation but all couched in language that sounded impressive but promised nothing.
That is an extreme case, but I'm sure you know people have problems with their web sites and end up with a site that under performs and is not what they wanted.
Then they find that they cannot get changes made in reasonable time, if at all, and they do not have the knowledge to do anything themselves.
I have been writing web sites for over fifteen years now, and have a successful track record of having them found easily in the search engines and generating a lot of sales either through online ordering and email enquires and even phone calls should customers need advice before buying.
For fifteen years we made our living from selling telescopes and other astronomical equipment and our web site
brought in most of our business through on line orders and calls resulting from people finding us in the search engines.
Our web site came up on the first page of google (UK) for the major makes of astronomical equipment.
